Opening of the new facilities at Te Mata Park Havelock North

Te Mata Peak is set to accommodate a forever increasing number of visitors as its new facilities were officially opened yesterday.

Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst attended the opening along with members of the Te Mata Trust.

The development of a larger car park, new toilets and a visitor shelter at the main gates of Te Mata Park was completed in February after receiving a financial boost from the Ministry of Tourism.

Hazlehurst said there was a strong community calling for more facilities at Te Mata Peak due to the park's management plan back in 2016.

"I'm proud of what's been achieved with the new facilities, which look great and will only enhance people's enjoyment of this wonderful natural asset," she said.

"Te Mata Peak is one of our region's most recognised and most visited attractions and is usually the first place visitors are taken when they come to Hawke's Bay."

The central government grant of $380,000 to go towards the work was announced in June 2017 by former Tourism Minister Paula Bennett.

Hastings District Council put $715,000 aside for the Te Mata Park project - which also included a second toilet block at the Tauroa Rd park entrance as well as drinking fountains and bike wash facilities.

Te Mata Park Trust Board chairman Mike Devonshire said there had been a huge increase in visitor numbers, with close to a million people visiting every year.

"These new facilities are a popular and welcome edition to the park's amenities. The feedback has been outstanding. We recently undertook a Park User Survey, and there was nothing but positive comments for the new development.

"It has been tastefully done and in keeping with the rustic nature of our park.

"We wish to acknowledge the unwavering support from the Hastings District Council and their effective partnership in creating a valuable asset that will be enjoyed by Hawke's Bay families and visitors for many years to come."

Te Mata Park's manager Emma Buttle was equally thrilled with the new facilities.

''We are delighted with the new amenities for Te Mata Park. The aim was to create a high calibre, functional and aesthetically pleasing visitor area, that reflects the rustic and unassuming appeal of the park. We believe this has been achieved, with great success, and we congratulate all those involved in every aspect of this project.''

''Today we also officially launched our fundraising campaign, One Giant Chance, to purchase 8.5 hectares of stunning new land, strategically located between Tauroa Car Park and the Gates Car Park. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity that will enrich, expand and protect our treasured Park."
