National electrical supplies company Ideal Electrical is almost doubling its footprint in Hastings, as it anchors a new $6 million commercial development in the city.

Ideal Electrical Hastings branch manager David Gibbons said the move would see the branch increase its warehouse capacity from 600sq m to 1000sq m.

"It's quite a big jump for us and it will have a covered drive-in area. It expands our storage space and more shop space, as well, to have more stock. So, it's all looking pretty positive.

"We haven't got enough space here and our lease is up, so rather than try and stay here we are expanding out."

It was also hoped the move would see an increase in staffing levels, Gibbons said.

"You have to set some targets for yourself, so getting a bigger building we have room for more personnel. It would be nice to get another couple of staff members."

The groundwork on the building would start of Wednesday, with Ideal expected to move into the new premises by April, next year.

The new site would form part of a larger development, at 306 Ellison Rd, Hastings, with five high-quality commercial units also available for sale or lease.

Colliers International has been exclusively appointed to market units 1-5 at 306 Ellison Rd.

Ian McLachlan of Colliers Hawke's Bay, who is marketing the property for sale with colleague Danny Blair, said units of between 150sq m to 550sq m were available.

Due for completion in April 2019, the development was ideally located in a thriving commercial and trade retail precinct on the eastern side of the Hastings CBD.

"This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire and occupy brand-new premises in an area that has undergone significant commercial and retail development in recent years," McLachlan says.

Blair said the 3544sq m site was zoned Commercial (8d) by the Hastings District Council.

"The development for sale comprises five individual unit titles, which can be purchased individually or as a single investment.

"Ideal Electrical is to be located on a standalone freehold property at the corner of the site.

"These premises have already been sold to a locally based investment syndicate."

All units will be commercial service units of 350sq m, 200sq m and 150sq m each, with the option of combining units 1 and 2 to create 550sq m. The units have been allocated seven, four and three on-site car parks respectively.

"Anchor tenant Ideal Electrical is moving from older, smaller premises diagonally opposite the development site."

Development manager Terry May said the two-stage project would see the new Ideal premises ready by April and then the separate units completed in May.

The development would cost about $6m and was based around similar developments in Onekawa, which had previously been well received by the market.

"The economy here seems strong still. There is good leasing inquiry and certainly from selling investment property is strong.

"The market is still very strong."
