Napier's newest councillor, Richard McGrath

Napier's newest councillor, Richard McGrath, says he is looking forward to learning the ropes of local government and then working to implement ideas he has for the city.

Mr McGrath was installed as a councillor at a special meeting of Napier City Council yesterday after beating eight others in the byelection.

"There are a lot of ideas I've come in with and I'm looking forward to working out the system and seeing when and where I can progress them," he said.

"It's the people who get you here and I'm pretty keen to get out and meet the other people I haven't met yet."

Mr McGrath is a former St John ambulance staffer who also spent 13 years as a nurse with the Blood Service.
