Tsunami effects from the major earthquake that struck Chile on Wednesday were felt as far west as Napier Port, experts say.
Hawke's Bay Regional council communications manager Drew Broadley said a variation in tidal patterns of 200-300mm had occurred at marina areas around Napier as a result of the quake.Mr Broadley said the tidal variations had been limited to a 24-hour period.
The 8.2-magnitude tremor killed at least six people and forced the evacuation of coastal areas in the South American country for several hours.
Overnight, 13 areas in New Zealand were hit by small tsunamis.
Chatham Islands Council manager Rana Solomon said surges measuring more than half a metre struck between 2am and 3am and surges were continuing yesterday morning.
