Napier Mayor Bill Dalton is on the mend after suffering a stroke on Wednesday evening.

Dalton is now in a serious but stable condition, as opposed to critical as he has been for the past two days, a spokesperson for Hawke's Bay District Health Board confirmed.

His wife Shirley said it was early days in Dalton's recovery, but she and his wider family are very pleased with the progress he is making.

His family wanted to thank the community for their kind support.

Napier City Council's Facebook page has been flooded with messages of support, which council collated into a booklet and gave to the Dalton family yesterday morning, with plans to do another booklet this morning.
