A man who suffered serious head injuries following an incident in Napier early Sunday morning is now in a serious condition in intensive care in Wellington Hospital.

A Capital and Coast District Health Board spokesman said the man's condition had changed from being stable in ICU on Monday.

Police said the man sustained serious injuries after an incident in the suburb of Tamatea, at about 2am on Sunday.

Hawke's Bay Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident that happened in the driveway of Tamatea Motor Inn in York Ave.

The man was walking on the driveway with an associate when he fell to the ground and received serious head injuries.

A police spokeswoman said investigations were still ongoing and no charges had been laid as yet.

The exact cause of the victim's fall and injuries had not yet been established.

Of particular interest to the police is a vehicle that may have stopped near the two people in the driveway just before 2am.
