Napier and Hastings passengers have been rated the worst in the country by Uber drivers.

Uber released its annual rider ratings this week for 2025.

At the end of each trip, drivers provide a rating (out of five) for their passengers’ behaviour and etiquette.

The average rider rating in Napier and Hastings was 4.86.

While hardly appalling, it was the lowest rating in the country.

Uber is a global rideshare giant, whereby customers book a vehicle via an app.

The company operates in 15 regions across New Zealand.

Uber did not share how many trips it provided around Napier and Hastings in 2025.

It also declined to share how many drivers it had registered in the area.

“The findings show where good etiquette is thriving, where standards have slipped, and how rider habits are shaping up,” the Uber report stated.

“Stealing the spotlight with near-perfect scores are newcomers Gisborne and Invercargill, sharing the top spot with a glowing 4.99.

“Further down the chimney is Napier-Hastings at 4.86 - not quite Grinch territory, but a timely reminder that small courtesies make a noticeable difference during the festive rush.”

A positive for Hawke’s Bay is that 4.86 rating outshone Australia, where the average rider rating is 4.82.

The report suggested proper rider etiquette included the likes of being ready to go when the driver arrives, making sure the pick-up location is accurate, and being polite.

While the report refers to passengers in the Napier-Hastings area, Uber confirmed its operational boundary stretches across Hawke’s Bay.

Uber Eats was not included in the data.
