A teen faces assault charges after going on a naked rampage.

A teenager is facing assault charges after he allegedly went on a violent, naked rampage in Hastings which ended when he stabbed himself in the chest.

The 18-year-old appeared in the Napier District Court yesterday, charged with male assaults female and injuring with intent to injure.

He was remanded in custody to appear again on August 8.

Before appearing in court, he was discharged from Hawke's Bay Hospital.

The alleged incident had left him fighting for his life 11 days earlier.

The young man allegedly attacked his 70-year-old grandmother, along with 65-year-old passerby John Higgs, on July 6.

The woman was taken to hospital with a serious head injury after allegedly being knocked to the ground by her grandson. She was later discharged.

Subsequently, it is alleged, the teen used a knife to inflict several wounds on himself including, it is understood, puncturing a lung.
