"When we performed people kept telling us that we sounded like Metallica and that we should do a tribute show ... it just kind of happened. We thought 'if we're going to do covers we may as well do them of something we really like'."
Despite being a Metallica tribute show, the band were also keen to promote their own music.
During their eight-year break from doing covers, My Damned Kind had produced two albums, Beyond Lies and Time Out.
Time Out saw the band become one of the only Kiwi bands listed by one of the United States' largest radio franchise, I Heart Media.
Their single The Way Home was also in the UK Beat 100 rock chart for eight weeks and finished at number two in the Beat 100 World chart.
"We want to show who we are, what we've been doing in the studio over the past few years.
"It's a real opportunity to get out there."
The tribute show was revived to give a special performance to a 16-year-old with a brain tumour whose dream was to perform with the band.
Mr Lorigan said that performance "brought back a few memories".
"We thought we've done all this work we might as well just keep going.
The band had also performed as a support act for well-known Kiwi bands like Opshop, and Elemeno P, as well as international artists.
-My Damned Kind will be bringing their "not to be missed show" for the first time to The Cabana in Napier, on Sunday December 27. The show starts at 7.30om with a $10.00 cover charge.
