The Hawke's Bay Serious Crash Unit is seeking help from the public as it continues to investigate the crash which killed father of six Matthew Kyte in Napier last month.

Kyte was the only occupant of the car when it crashed into a tree on Lamason St at about 4.10am on Saturday, September 16.

Senior Constable Tim Rowe said inquiries to date had identified that Kyte was seen by and interacted with members of the public in Hastings St, Napier, and was also at the Z Energy on Kennedy Rd between 3am and 3.15am that morning.

His dark blue Toyota Prado station wagon was last seen heading along Kennedy Rd towards the Napier CBD about 3.15am.

Brother Daniel Kyte said they hoped the circumstances behind the crash would be known so there could be some closure.

He said the time since the crash had been tough but the investigation seemed to be going well so far.

"There is a missing piece between 3am and 4.10am and where he was at that moment, so we need people to help us and come forward with information."

Daniel had been having a barbecue with him that night but was dropped home by Matthew at about 10pm.

"I know he went to a few pubs after that but that's all we know."

The family were left devastated after the crash, as Matthew had recently moved down from Auckland with his children to make a fresh start.

He was survived by his six children - Josiah, 11, Elly-May, 9, Amylia, 7, 5-year-old twins Grace and Gabby and 3-year-old Malachi.

Daniel said he was a devoted father, who loved his kids.

"The younger ones are coping okay as they still don't quite understand what has happened but the older two are feeling it more."

However, they were all enjoying the school holidays, going to the parks and pools and having some fun together.

Matthew Kyte is described as Caucasian, about 175cm tall, balding and with glasses. Prior to the crash he was wearing a blue and white tie-dyed T-shirt and blue jeans.

Police are asking for anyone who saw him or his vehicle between 3.15am and 4.10am on Saturday September 16, to contact them on (06) 877 0609. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
