Roughly 20 people trying to drive down rural roads near Hastings were allegedly blocked off because of another large Mongrel Mob gathering.

A witness told Hawke's Bay Today between 30 and 40 members congregated in the middle of the multi-pronged intersection of Taihape Rd, Swamp Rd and Koropiko Rd (State Highway 50) holding up more than a dozen cars about 5.45pm on Tuesday.

The witness, who did not want to be named, said she and her husband had to sit in their car for almost 10 minutes while two of the Mob members did burnouts.

"My husband and I were on our way to my parents when we came across it - there was one car and bike doing it and just a massive crowd of Mongrel Mob watching," she said.

The incident comes less than two weeks since the Mongrel Mob's controversial patching ceremony on Te Mata Peak, where police closed the road to manage traffic. Photo / Facebook

"We sat there for around 10 minutes, but there were about 20 other cars from all directions waiting also.

"We didn't want to try to get through because we didn't want to get hit by one of the cars or get intimidated.

"We did think about calling the cops but by the time they would have got there they would have left anyway."

The intersection is near to a local cemetery, but it's unclear why the gang was there.

A police spokesperson said they received a report relating to a number of vehicles doing burnouts on SH50 near the cemetery about 5.55pm on Tuesday.

On arrival police were unable to locate any offending vehicles.

Less than two weeks ago the Mongrel Mob held a controversial patching ceremony on Te Mata Peak, where police decided to close the road for the safety of traffic going up.

Hastings Mongrel Mob leader Rex Timu met with local leaders on Monday. He said after the meeting traffic on the Peak had to better managed by the Mob.
