Zion and RJ McDonald celebrated their February 14 wedding by sharing 100 McDonald’s cheeseburgers donated to their guests in honour of their McDonald union.

Zion and RJ McDonald celebrated their February 14 wedding by sharing 100 McDonald’s cheeseburgers donated to their guests in honour of their McDonald union.

Some cheesy wedding stunts make you smile, and others make you grimace.

Which way you react to Hawke’s Bay newlyweds Zion and Rivah-Jayde (RJ) McDonald’s wedding showstopper will depend on how you feel about fast food.

A platter of 100 cheeseburgers were gifted by a local McDonald’s to Zion and RJ’s guests at their reception at No 5 Cafe & Larder on February 14, in honour of the beginning of their own McDonald union.

It was some quick thinking by Zion’s mum Pania McDonald that began the stunt.

“It was a shot-in-the-dark kind of moment,” Zion said.

“Mum had asked if we could get McDonald’s coupons to have at the tables at the reception.

“But what she found was McDonald’s themselves had responded, going above and beyond and said, ‘hey, let us actually deliver cheeseburgers for all of your guests’.”

Zion, who typically chows down on a Big Mac, and RJ, more of a Quarter Pounder lover, were McLovin’ the idea from the moment they heard it.

“The hardest thing was actually trying to contain it, because we were already so excited to share with everyone what was going on,” Zion said.

He said McDonald’s arrived at the reception at 8.30pm with the platter, even providing a selection without pickles and onions.

“All the guests were shocked to say the least.”

Director of marketing Luke Rive said when the fast food chain heard RJ was officially becoming a McDonald, it felt like a fun opportunity to be part of a really special day.

“Macca’s shows up in people’s lives in all sorts of everyday ways, so being included in a moment like this meant a lot to us.

“We’re glad we could help make RJ and Zion’s day a little more memorable.”
