Today's Hawke's Bay welcome for American rock music star Joe Walsh will be held at the EIT's marae.

The welcome was to take place at the nearby Otatara Pa reserve but host Denis O'Reilly said a decision to change the venue had to be made because of the rain and the likely deterioration of the path up to the pa site.

People wanting to see Walsh should be at the EIT's wahanga Maori by 11.30am, he said.

Walsh is still expected to make a more private pilgrimage to the pa site, which he has visited twice in the past, in 1989 and 2004.

Fresh from The Eagles' weekend concerts in Auckland, Walsh and wife Marjorie will be in Hawke's Bay until tomorrow, hosted by drugs education movement CAYAD (Community Action Youth and Drugs).
