A man has died after being run over by a tractor in Weber yesterday.

Dannevirke police Sergeant Paul Adrian confirmed police attended the incident near Dannevirke at about 5pm.

As a result of the injuries the 89-year-old was flown to Palmerston North Hospital and later died.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter flew to the rural scene at about 4.30pm. It's understood the man had been hit by the tractor while collecting firewood.

Mr Adrian said the matter had been referred to the coroner and investigations were ongoing.

The man's name was yet to be released.

WorkSafe said it had been advised about the tractor death and inspectors were now making inquiries to determine whether an investigation should be launched.

The initial notification to WorkSafe said that a man had been run over by a tractor at a rural property in Dannevirke.

Police had told WorkSafe the injured man had subsequently died.

A spokesperson said this information was from the initial notification to WorkSafe and might not accurately reflect the circumstances.

This would be clearer after inspectors had completed their initial inquiries.
