A man being hunted by the Armed Offenders Squad in Hastings has handed himself in.

The man walked into the Flaxmere police station just after 3pm, a police statement this afternoon said.

It was initially thought the man had been on the streets near a local primary school with a gun, but this information turned out to be incorrect, police said.

Peterhead School in Flaxmere had been locked down by police, with pupils told to stay indoors, as a search for the alleged gunman in the area took place.

A Peterhead School spokeswoman, in Flaxmere, said police had been talking with the school principal and no children had been allowed to leave the school until police gave the all clear.

"The man is currently believed to be on a property in Peterhead Ave, also in Flaxmere," an earlier police statement issued this afternoon read.

"Peterhead Primary School has been locked down and surrounding roads have been cordoned off, including Peterhead Ave, Liverpool Cres, Plymouth Rd and Tilbury Ave."

Locals on Peterhead Ave said the street had been closed with police blocks, which were lifted about 3pm.
