A man who allegedly escaped police custody and then crashed into several parked cars in Napier's CBD on Monday morning has been arrested after a foot-chase.

The 28-year-old man has been charged with escaping police custody, resisting police, failing to stop for red and blue flashing lights, wilful damage and reckless driving.

A police spokeswoman said the man initially came to the attention of police on Monday morning in relation to a family harm-related incident.

Police attempted to stop the man's vehicle on Hyderabad Rd, Napier, just after 7am.

A pursuit that headed in the direction Napier's CBD was abandoned soon after due to the manner of driving and the vehicle was later found crashed on Riverbend Rd.

The man's car allegedly hit several vehicles on Hastings St while he was fleeing.

"The drivers of those vehicles have been spoken to by police," the spokeswoman said.

Police say the man fled the vehicle on foot but was arrested a short time later.

He is due to appear in the Hastings District Court on Tuesday.

Later that morning, at 10.44am, a different driver came to the attention of police due to the manner of their driving on Hillary Cres, Napier.

However, a short pursuit heading towards the CBD was abandoned soon after because police believed they knew who was driving, according to a police spokeswoman.

Inquiries were being made.
