Highlighting the dramatic Mahia landscape helped a Mahia home scoop a Supreme Award at the East Coast, Manawatu and Whanganui Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year competition.

Judges said it gave Bain Construction many challenges.

"This understated, clever design incorporated many features which capture the uninterrupted surrounding views," the judges said.

"Surrounded in floating timber decks and clad in vertical cedar, this beach house shows many areas of detailing and workmanship.

In the New Home $550,000 to $700,000 category, it was "a wonderful beach house and completed the owners dream".

Bain picked up six regional awards for three homes at the competition. They were awarded the East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home $550,000 to $700,000 award for their Mahia home.

Bain also won a Gold Award and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award for a renovation in Gisborne in the Bunnings Renovation $500,000 to $1 million category. Bain was also awarded a Silver Award in the PlaceMakers Volume/Group Housing $450,000 - $700,000 category for another home in Gisborne.

Redmond Builders and Construction took out the Supreme Renovation of the Year Award and a Gold Award and Category win for Bunnings Renovation $500,000 - $1 million Award category for a Havelock North renovation. It was also awarded the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award and the Outdoor Living Award.

Judges said the winning renovation was a very unassuming 1950s house, which was extensively modernised with a seamless result.

"Additions and exterior detailing were carefully reproduced to match the existing home," judges said.

"Outdoor areas have been created at different ends of the house with a superb pool area, pool house, and an additional dining area and guest accommodation.

"The use of existing timber floors and modern decor has made this a true modern family home."

There were 11 Gold Award winners from the East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on November 25 in Auckland.
