One of Hawke's Bay's most expensive and well-known retreats has been put on the market.

Te Awanga's Summerlee homestead, which rents for $1800 a night, will go under the hammer next month.

The Mediterranean-style villa is part of the independently owned accommodation operated by Black Barn Vineyards.

Bayleys Hawke's Bay director Glyn Rees-Jones said the property was known for its ocean views and location beside Cape Kidnappers Golf Course.

Built in 1926, the 545sq m two-storey homestead had seven bedrooms and five bathrooms.

Within the 4.4 hectares of landscaped grounds there was a floodlit tennis court, swimming pool and pavilion, orchard and two paddocks large enough to graze horses or sheep.

For the past three years the property had been "fully booked," with reservations often made a year or more in advance.

The homestead has a current CV of $2.65 million but was expected to sell for a greater amount. It is being marketed for sale as a going concern or private residence by Bayleys Hawke's Bay through an auction process on March 27.
