Take responsibility for actions
A lot of our problems would be solved if a law was passed that everyone is responsible for their actions.
I realise there would be exceptions.
These days children seem to be taught; it's not your fault, blame anything or anyone else for your problems.
Examples; the Government, parents, school, race, religion, colonisation and the main excuses - drugs and alcohol. The last two - the person made the decision to take drugs or drink to excess.
In the paper over the last few weeks have been some good examples.
Our graffiti vandal can't pay as he has a low-paid job. I couldn't care less. He needs to pay for the clean up - even if its $10 a week for the rest of his life.
Then the idiots who ripped up the grass with their cars. Pay every cent to repair the damage and they don't leave the country till its all paid.
Those who flee the police and cause damage.
The car should be sold if undamaged, to pay for costs. If not, they pay in the usual way.
'Tongue in cheek' for this one. The abuse from those drunk and on drugs abusing the staff at the emergency department at the hospital, good solution for them - a shipping container outside, with benches, toilet and a water tap inside the container. In they go, till they can calm down or come off their high and the drunken hangers-on off to the police cells for the night.
Jean Pentelow, Hastings
Common sense
I have nothing but praise for Kodie North in her effort to make our roads safer and hope that her school project can have some positive results.
The crossroads at Heretaunga St/Allerton Rd and the opposite Davis St at St Leonards, I agree, are a potential hazard. However, I don't believe this offset intersection is any different, traffic problem wise, than many, many others in our community. For my health I walk this area every morning, I have never had cause to call for another roundabout to be established there to increase safety either vehicular or pedestrian. What our emphasis should concentrate upon is common sense which so many drivers and pedestrians appear to lack.
In my case, I either walk to the lighted crossing at the Post Office lights to cross the road or, cross half way at a time, at Townshend St, to cross Heretaunga St.
The possibility of accidents occurring, to my mind, is based simply on people's laziness. If common sense were to be applied, then Kodie's concern, resulting in her worthwhile project, would be unnecessary.

Dead planet
David Trubridge's article in Tuesday's HB Today should be a wake-up call for us all - If we use up all our resources by our profligate way of life, there will be nothing left, and beautiful Earth will become a dead planet, and our children along with it.

Quake fundraiser
Re Marineland quake fundraiser plan sunk: I think this is a good idea so NCC, let's go for it!
