I have tried to follow the sequence of events leading up to Mayor Yule's letter to HBToday (Dec 12) in which he explained why Ocean Beach would be gated and closed to vehicles from 8pm to 6am each day.
I can only find referenceto one landowner, PukePuke Tangiora Estate, who wanted the gate. From what I have seen, Andy Lowe and the surf club did not agree.
Mr Yule has said that a council committee meeting was not needed, so did he or someone else make a unilateral decision on the matter and, if so, is that democratic?
It seems that a contract has been issued to a private security firm to operate the gates. Is this for always and at what cost?
Perhaps as a ratepayer I am not entitled to know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. However, I do think Mayor Yule has some more explaining to do.
I counted four cars at various times during my journey, who overtook cars by crossing a yellow line. One of those cars overtook three cars by crossing the yellow line.
Were they tired and older drivers. I think not. No police in sight.
