Kiwi girls spotted using shopping trolleys to move couch across Wellington

A group of Kiwi girls discovered online fame after they were photographed using two supermarket trolleys to move a couch across the streets of Wellington.

The photo shows seven girls moving the piece of furniture across the street, using two supermarket trolleys and a piece of string, as a perfect illustration of Kiwi ingenuity.

The photo first surfaced online yesterday and was quickly shared by hundreds across different websites.

Morgan Pearce identified herself as the proud owner of the couch, which she named Bessie, and says it is "comfy as" in her hostel room.

The 18-year-old told the Herald she got Bessie from the Wellington City Mission Store on the corner of Abel Smith St and Taranaki St.

"It took a good hour to get her into my hostel room," she added.

Pearce and her friends borrowed the trolleys from a nearby Briscoes store. It was around 5pm on Monday when she purchased Bessie and, with the store about to close, she had to improvise.

Pearce, originally from Hawke's Bay, says she got plenty of strange looks from people as she and her friends moved the couch along but she also got offers of help.

"One car of dudes pulled over and asked if we needed a hand but their car looked like it couldn't handle Bessie so we kept going."

Pearce is originally from Havelock North and moved to Wellington only three days ago to study special effects makeup artistry. "I think it's pretty funny I've made my mark already," she jokes.

Bessie cost her "a solid $50". "I bargained it down from $70 and there was going to be a $20 delivery fee so I thought I'd save myself some money as I'm a poor student."

Despite the tight finances, Pearce made sure to repay the girls for their help and bought everyone an iceblock.

People all over the internet were impressed by the girls' resourcefulness.

"One of the lasting impressions of my time in NZ is the sheer awesomeness of Kiwi women. Equal to or better than just about any task or trial that life can throw at them. Top job ladies of middle earth," a Facebook user said.

"Very cool, see us women can do anything ... love it, [I'd] have done the same thing if I had to ... even in the past have used skateboards lol," another Facebook user said.

The trolleys were promptly returned to Briscoes.
