KAURI ASH, 10, pictured here in mid-flight yesterday at the Frimley Aquatic centre, will have to treasure the memory of sunny swimming for the next couple of days.
The metservice said temperatures reached 23deg at the Hastings aerodrome on Saturday and Sunday, but the warm weather was to give way to
a southerly swing today which would bring cloud, rain and cooler conditions to Hawke's Bay.
The region's swimming pools have been inundated with people looking to cool off when the weather has heated up.
Frimley Aquatic centre manager Reece Kennedy said the weekend had been a big one for the pool, with 600 people coming through each day - good numbers for what he said was a relatively small pool.
"Once the sun comes out it's really full on," he said. "It's even been busy at the indoor pool."
He was expecting today to be a bit quieter.
Ocean Spa manager Ian Clayton said Christmas week this year was a bit better than last year, with about 1000 more punters heading in for a dip: "The weather has been absolutely superb, apart from today. It's been very good for swimming pool businessmen, but maybe not so good for orchardists."
Splash Planet recorded its highest visitor numbers of the summer season yesterday as 2424 people walked through the gates of the Hastings water theme park.
Manager Vicki Munro said there was a mixture of visitors from out of the Bay at the park but she thought most were local people taking advantages of the discounts on the park's club card.
"We had a hummer of a day, we've had high numbers and my team at Splash Planet have handled it well," Ms Munro said.
The Metservice said rain should ease tomorrow, and the sun would return properly by Wednesday.
