Napier woman Denise Keelan is quite the celebrity in her community after making an appearance on the fourth season of Maori TV's popular live karaoke show Homai Te Pakipaki.
"It was an overwhelming experience," Ms Keelan said. "When I got home I was like a little star in my neighbourhood, I
didn't realise how many people support it and watch the show."
"A lady even recognised me in the street when I was in Palmerston North."
After plucking up the courage to audition, Ms Keelan made it from the heats to the first semifinal round of the show having been voted as a favourite by viewers.
"I always wanted to go on the show since the very first season, but I was just too chicken - until I saw my relations on there and thought if my Auntie, Uncle, and cousin can do it, so can I."
Ms Keelan flew to Auckland this morning and will be performing live tonight on Homai Te Pakipaki from 8.30pm.
"I have had 50 million texts and phone calls from people wishing me well, I just want to get up there and represent for all of them," she said.
"I have been looking constantly at the words to my songs Super Duper by Joss Stone and Valerie by Amy Winehouse."
Eleven contestants will go head-to-head in tonight's semifinal, singing two songs each, and if Ms Keelan gets enough votes she will move through to the grand final and a chance at the $10,000 prize.
The grand final will be held at Auckland's Logan Campbell Centre on Friday, October 15.
Auckland-based Napier man Erimana Hirini will also be performing on the show tonight.
