Severe frosts are forecast across parts of the North Island over the next couple of days.

Hawke's Bay can expect frosts for tomorrow morning before a northwesterly change moves in for the rest of the week.

Thursday is set to be fine with 18C predicted.

Friday and Saturday will herald the arrival of southerlies and rain, with temperatures falling to 15C.

Those conditions are set to stick around with showers and light winds forecast for the first day of winter on Sunday.

Napier and Hastings should see maximum temperature remaining at 15C.

Further south however the prospect of clear skies is forecast with sunshine set for Sunday in Dannevirke.

The trade-off is that the temperature will struggle to get above 10C.

For the twin cities Monday will return to a more early spring-like feel with northwesterlies, clear skies and 16C.

Dannevirke is set to be hit by strong winds tomorrow and Thursday.

Tararua District Council chief executive Blair King said Dannevirke's fire brigade was sent to a couple of weather-related calls on Sunday as winds reached 120-130km/h.

However, there had been very little wind in Dannevirke yesterday. Weather had been mainly fine with the exception of a hail shower.
