Ngatarawa Winery cellar door are drawing their visitors in with their summery rose, elegant chardonnay and tasty desert wine this summer.

According to cellar door manager Karen Inglis visitor numbers are on the rise and she only expected it to continue.

"I think there is a lot going on like we had the Colgate Games last week and the cycling carnival, but in saying that there have been a lot of international visitors too."

She said people were mainly from Australia, England and Germany.

There had also been a "scattering" of people from Denmark, Switzerland, America and Canada.

The most popular drops among their visitors was the rose and chardonnay.

"We released the rose not long ago and it is not as sweet, which I think people like. We have used merlot and a little bit of pinot noir so it is much drier."

The chardonnay pleasantly surprised wine tasters with its "lovely and creamy" texture.

She said a lot of chardonnays are quite oaky and are known to be big and buttery but they had gone for the more elegant approach.

"I think that's what a lot of people like about Hawke's Bay chardonnays."

Their desert wine also joined the rose and chardonnay in popularity.

"I have noticed in the last year or two people seem to be enjoying that type of wine a lot more."

Ms Inglis believed the cellar door was vital to building a good reputation, as it acted like the shop window.

"Its like anything, if you go in somewhere and have bad service then you aren't going to go back."

The staff at Ngatarawa are focused on creating an enjoyable atmosphere, which they hope is combined with quality wine and service.

"We like to ask questions to our customers and treat them to what they want, as everyone is different and wants different things."

She said they try not to be too over the top and will talk on the customers level.

"For example we won't start going on about what happens in the laboratory if that's not the level they are at or interested in."

The setting adds to the experience and atmosphere for the wine tasters with the central building a 120 year-old racing stables.

Ngatarawa is family owned by the Corban's and was established in 1902.
