Meanwhile on Tuesday one person was taken to hospital in Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter and two by road ambulance after another crash on State Highway 5, this time near Te Pohue.
Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter Trust general manager Ian Wilmot said three people were in the vehicle.
"We transported a female patient in her mid-20s, who had been a passenger in the vehicle," he said. "She suffered head, shoulder and arm injuries from the accident."
Wilmot added: "The two others were transported by road ambulance."
A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the crash about 3.01pm on Tuesday.
One woman in her 20s following the crash has been transferred to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition for further treatment.
The road had since reopened.
Then later on Tuesday, fire and emergency services were called to assist in yet another motor vehicle accident on SH5.
The incident occurred at 9.55pm and involved a car.
One woman sustained minor injuries.
Two crews from Napier attended the scene.
