Homicide investigation: Woman, 22, dies after serious assault in Hastings

A man wanted over what is now a homicide investigation in Hastings is still on the run, despite pleas from both police and family members for him to turn himself in.

Police again appealed to the public for information on Monday about the whereabouts of 26-year-old Ranapera Taumata.

Taylor-Jade Hira, of Hastings, died on Sunday afternoon, after the assault at an address in Huia St, Camberley on August 15.

It is understood the 22-year-old was taken off life support and died while at Wellington Regional Hospital.

She was transferred from Hawke's Bay Hospital on Thursday evening.

On Friday her condition improved from critical to serious but deteriorated again by Sunday.

Following her death, the investigation was upgraded from an assault to a homicide.

On Monday police released an updated image of Taumata, who has a warrant to arrest.

Police say they have concerns for his wellbeing.

The assault was brought to the attention of police after the woman was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning.

That day, there was a heavy police presence around Hastings and Napier. Police set up a cordon along Station Rd, Whakatu about 11am.

They were seen showing residents a photo and a car was seen being put on a transporter, while police watched.

Another cordon was put in place in Clive around 4pm. Police say a number of people are assisting them with their inquiries.
