An allegedly fatigued driver's car hit a phone box in Waipukurau, sending it flying four metres into the air.

The flying phone box then knocked flat a dog walker as it landed on the footpath, injuring her knee, shocked witnesses said on Tuesday.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser hit a power pole positioned roughly a metre from the phone box, outside the old Waipukurau Hospital, and abruptly stopped about 10am on Monday, police said.

Porangahau Rd was closed between McLean Terrace and Gaisford Tce as emergency services cleaned up the scene.

The driver, a woman, was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital by ambulance for observation, Waipukurau police said.

The dog walker was able to leave the scene after being assessed by St John ambulance workers.

Waipukurau Police said the cause of the crash was being investigated, but was being treated as "fatigue".

A Spark spokesperson said the phone box would be replaced.
