Teenage homicide victim Kaea Karauria will be commemorated in a hīkoi calling for safety and awareness for young people in Napier.
The Hīkoi for Kaea is set to go ahead in Napier on Sunday, with organisers saying it is driven by whānau and hāpori (community), aimed at raising community awareness for the safety of all tamariki.
It is one response to the fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Kaea Karauria on May 11,a homicide for which no one has yet been arrested.
The hīkoi will be based on Pukemokimoki Marae, where events will be held after the march.
Assembly time at the marae is 11.45am, with the hīkoi to commence at midday.
“We want to rally in support of survivors and families who have been impacted by violence, letting them know ‘we see you’,” organisers say.
“Although the hīkoi comes as a response to such unfortunate circumstances, the message and overall goal for the kaupapa is to promote wellness and positive community initiatives that champion rangatahi in their development, all while keeping them safe and thriving,” they say.
