Magpies player Jason Long remembers his first pair of boots, but knows some families struggle to afford them.

"They were black with red I think they were adidas boots, I was four years old," he said.
The talented prop is right behind Hawke's Bay Today's Bring Yer Boots campaign, which
encourages people to dig out and donate their old footy boots or sports shoes.
Once collected, the growing stash will be distributed to needy families through Sport Hawke's Bay.

Last year Mr Long brought in his junior boots after reading about the campaign, fronted by friend and fellow teammate Ihaia West. He encourages others to do the same.
"I haven't seen anyone without boots but I do go and watch the juniors, some of my friends have kids who play, and it does get pretty chilly out there.

"I know people have got boots sitting in the shed, they are just going to waste and will probably end up in the bin."

Mr Long's passion for rugby was born from watching his brother, and even from a very young age he chose to train with his older sibling's team. He knows it can be costly replacing boots every year or two, especially when counting travel costs, club fees and uniforms.

"For families with four or five kids who play rugby that's tough," he said.
This is the second year Hawke's Bay Today has teamed up with Sport Hawke's Bay to give all kids an equal chance on the playing field. For 2015, the collection has also expanded to include running or sports shoes.

Editor Andrew Austin said it was a great way to give back to our community, adding the boots would really make a difference to the children who pulled them on this winter.
