Hawke's Bay students created 31 of the pieces that were on display at the 2020 Ringa Toi Student Exhibition in Wellington at the end of last month.
The annual exhibition showcases the artwork of secondary school students with a focus on Toi Māori, containing pieces from secondary school students workingtowards NCEA levels 1 – 3.
Artworks exhibited included Toi Wharepora (weaving), Toi Matihiko (digital), Toi Matatuhi (printmaking), Toi Waituhi (paint, ink, drawing), Toi Whakaahua (photography), Toi Matarau (multimedia) and Toi Whakairo (carving).
The 27 students that produced the works came from eight secondary schools around Hawke's Bay; Napier Boys' High School, Napier Girls' High School, Tamatea High School, Taradale High School, Te Aute College, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Ara Hou and William Colenso College.

Waiora Kireka of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga's work "Matahiwi" won the Commended award for Toi Matarau, while she also had another piece showcased at the exhibition.

Ngāiterangi Rahipere of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Ara Hou's work "Te Aorangi" won the Commended award for Toi Waituhi.

Ringa Toi was held at the Asteron Centre in Wellington from Wednesday 23 September to Friday 2 October, and all the artworks will soon be viewable online through a "virtual exhibition" at www.nzqa.govt.nz/RingaToi20
