One Waipawa Lotto player walked away with $250,000 after winning a share of Lotto First Division in Wednesday’s draw.
The winner purchased the ticket at BP Waipawa.
Winning numbers from the draw were 2, 3, 11, 20, 25, 39. The bonus ball was 14 and the Powerball, which wasn’t struck, was 10.
The Waipawa win wasn’t the only Hawke’s Bay victory in the draw.
Ten lucky Lotto players, including one MyLotto player from Hastings, also won $20,102 with Lotto Second Division.
A Hawke’s Bay player also snatched a Suzuki Jimny Sierra Auto (2-tone) in the recent Keno promotion.
Three other players from Dargaville and Auckland also won $250,000. An Auckland player also snatched $300,000 after winning Strike Four. The winning Strike ticket was sold on MyLotto to a player from Auckland, with the numbers 2, 25, 20, 11.
Person in serious condition after Hastings crash
One person was taken to hospital in a serious condition on Thursday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on the intersection of Outram Rd and Riverslea Rd in Hastings.
Emergency services attended the incident at about 4pm, with Hato Hone St John staff sending one ambulance and one rapid response vehicle.
“We treated one person at the scene who was in a serious condition at the scene and transported them to Hawke’s Bay Hospital,” a Hato Hone St John spokesperson said.
A police spokesperson said the road was blocked for a short period but reopened soon after.
Bay Cities’ Symphonic steampunk surprise
Industrial revolution meets futuristic fantasy will be the theme of a special concert at Waiapu Cathedral next month.
The Bay Cities’ Symphonic Band and special guests, the Octavius Choir, have teamed up to present the steampunk-inspired musical experience Extraordinary Machines of Clockwork and Steam.
Featuring music by George Gershwin and Ron Goodwin and a sprinkling of seasonal cheer, the event will also feature the band’s new percussion instruments.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to showcase a range of new percussion instruments we’ve purchased through generous funding from Pub Charities, and we’re delighted to be building new relationships with the Napier Waiapu Cathedral, the Octavius Choir and their Director of Music Anthony Tattersall,” co-conductor Laura Grady said.
Although not formally a ‘Christmas’ concert, audiences will still be able to enjoy a few pre-Christmas musical treats with seasonal choir items and a joint finale of selections from the popular feel-good movie, ‘The Polar Express.’
Creative Communities Napier has also provided funds to make the show more accessible.
“Given the current cost of living and the challenges that many people are still facing after cyclone Gabrielle - being able to put on an event like this for our communities, without having to charge a higher ticket price to cover costs is a great feeling,” Grady said.
The event will be held 2pm on Sunday, November 26, at Waiapu Cathedral in Napier. Entry is by koha/donation at the door.
Big win for Karamū High entrepreneurs
A Karamū High School business enterprise has scooped up three top awards at the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) regional awards.
Posie Papers, the brainchild of CEO Esta Chaplin, snatched the top business award, while Chaplin was also awarded CEO of the Year. Karamū High School teacher Brandon Callow received the runner-up award for teacher of the year.
Posie Paper’s mantra is to aid the transition of school wastepaper into handmade recycled paper cards with native seeds embedded in the envelopes.
The regional awards recognised students who participated in the YES programme, through which they ran their own businesses.
A team of four Year 13s made up the Posie Papers business, including Chaplin, head student Lena Ormsby, Amie Chatterton, and Bella Casson.
The group will now represent the region at the YES National Awards in Wellington on December 4, and pitch for the chance to be crowned National Company of the Year.
Chaplin said the awards came as a surprise, but it was great “just knowing that all the hard work you put in is recognised.”
“We’ve had so much support. As soon as we tell people about our product, they’re like ‘wow’.”
She said while they plan to continue Posie Papers, their direction will slightly change to offer paper workshops to young students. Although, they plan to release a special Christmas card.
YES Regional Coordinator Fran Arlidge commended the group’s “incredible achievement”.
“The judges believed that the team was extremely engaging and that they have the foundations of a great start-up business, with a strong focus on being eco-friendly,” she said.
Donate tools for cyclone relief
The Napier Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is seeking tools for cyclone-affected people in its Christmas collection.
Many people not only lost household furniture and clothing in Cyclone Gabrielle but also entire contents of sheds and garages.
Insurance may be covering the biggest items but that doesn’t cover the little items that we take for granted.
This year the CAB volunteer team is collecting hand tools in good condition, hardware store gift cards or cash donations to buy tools.
The collection will be distributed by people who are working directly with those devastated by the cyclone.
To support this initiative pop into their offices at Bower House in Napier South. The building is next to The Warehouse car park.

The updated New Zealand Certificate in Fruit Production Level 3 offers on-the-job training from Primary ITO | Te Pūkenga with options so people can get the training best suited to their region and business.
In Hawke’s Bay, new learners will join the 129 other people learning on the job, across the region’s most widely planted crops like apples, pears, summer fruit and kiwifruit at 27 orchards and other growers.

Bookings open for HazMobile
Hastings and Napier residents will be able to dispose of hazardous waste for free on November 26 such as garden sprays, car oil and fuel, cleaners, paints and chemicals.
The HazMobile service will be available on that date, although the location is not being released publicly, as the service is restricted to the first 650 registrations.
