With Guy Fawkes coming up this Sunday Napier City Council is urging fireworks fans to be considerate of endangered dotterels that live on the city’s foreshore.

Currently, it is nesting season for these birds making it vital to respect their nesting areas.

People should not light fires and set off fireworks along the foreshore in known dotterel nesting areas which are Beacons Reserve (the walkway between Westshore and Bay View) and the beach reserve south of the National Aquarium.

Hawke’s Bay shearer’s record hopes dashed

A World shearing record attempt which was to have featured former Napier Boys’ High School student Sam Henderson in West Australia has been called-off after the lambs did not meet the required minimum wool weight.

Henderson and fellow New Zealanders Jimmy Samuels, of Marton, and Australia-based Levin Neil, from Taumarunui, were targeting the 3-stand record for merino lambs in nine hours near Kojonup.

The lambs were required to carry an average of at least 1kg of wool each, but the weight was unable to be met in a wool-weigh shear in the woolshed on Thursday, on the eve of the bid, in front of judges, including one from South Africa.

The organisation said the Hawke’s Bay Regional Events Fund was designed to deliver the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment (MBIE) Regional Events Fund to events in a way that drives visitation and economic benefit to Hawke’s Bay and stimulates recovery following Cyclone Gabrielle.

The fund is a contestable events fund with a total pool of $100,000, with no more than $25,000 allocated to any single event.

All applications will be assessed by the Hawke’s Bay Events Fund Panel against the outlined criteria and guidelines. Applications close Sunday, November 5 and any application information can be found at www.hawkesbaytourism.nz
