A Hawke's Bay couple have decided to take their bright yellow 1974 Mini on a 2500km journey from Kaitaia to Invercargill, all for charity.

John and Karyn Glew will be tracing the 1981 route in the classic film Goodbye Pork Pie along with 60 other drivers from throughout New
Zealand.

The six-day race begins on Good Friday and the couple are aiming to raise $3000 for KidsCan.

The pair are being sponsored by Hastings-based PKF Carr & Stanton Limited.

CEO Brendan Jackson said John and Karyn Glew had been clients of PKF for more than 30 years and he was more than happy to help them.

"They approached us asking if we would be interested in funding them for the Pork Pie Rally where they'll be travelling all the way down in their Mini to Invercargill and they've only got six days to do it.

"Their Mini is an original and it's had a wee bit of work done under the bonnet because it's going to be quite a long journey. We've got an office in Kaitaia and they'll be holding a street party for them when they arrive and all the funds from that will go to KidsCan as well."

Karyn Glew said the rally was something she had always wanted to do and said it was a nail-biting process when it came to entering the event.

"There's only 60 spots available and it's the same process you'd go through waiting to buy a Mission Concert ticket - you have to wait in line. Even though I logged onto the website early, we managed to get the 41st place, so it's definitely a case of first-in, first-served."

The couple have owned their beloved bright yellow Mini for about 10 years and have spent about $10,000 on it.

"The Mini just had new seats put in, but in order to put them in, they cut away part of the chassis - which holds the whole car together, so they had to take it off the road and fix that up. The car was still in bits yesterday, but it all seems to be fine now."

PKF held a bright yellow morning tea on Thursday in support of the venture and encouraged the community to make donations in support of the rally.

• Donations can be made through a "GoFundRaise" page and search "Team PKF" or
link https://porkpiecharityrun2019.gofundraise.co.nz/payments/donate/page/618299, or at PKF Carr & Stanton Limited in Hastings.
