A police officer manning a drink-drive checkpoint at Clive early today ended up spending the night in Hawke's Bay Hospital after being struck by a car that failed to stop.

The officer was working as part of a team breath testing drivers near the Farndon Road, SH2 intersection.

An approaching car turned into Farndon Rd, crossed over the centre line markings and glanced the officer.

He received cuts and grazing to his legs, arms and face.

The driver of the car made off at speed but crashed about 2km away.
