Bobbing dolphins

It was a spectacular display of nature for Napier resident Halie Macale, who got to witness these dolphins playing while fishing north of Pania reef. Macale got in touch just after lunchtime yesterday to say she was out fishing, and the dolphins weren't helping. She didn't mind though, as they put on a playful display. Macale also featured in Hawke's Bay Today earlier this week, spotting a seal in Napier.

Time to slow down

Lower speed limits stemming from a review by the Hastings District Council come into effect on Wednesday. New limits are: Arataki Rd (50km/h from Brookvale Rd to the current 50km/h near Russell Robertson Dr), Chatham Rd (50km/h), Farndon Rd (80km/h, from Pakōwhai Rd to the 50km/h zone near Clive), Kirkwood Rd (extension 50km/h zone to 350m northwest of Wilkes Pl), Percival Rd (50km/h), St George's Rd (80km/h from current 80km/h section to Te Aute Rd), York Rd (80km/h from current 70km/h area intersection with SH50A).

Napier Girls' High School cancelled last night's school ball after receiving a threat against students' safety. Some students had already begun their preparation for the big evening at the Rodney Green Centennial Event Centre. Hawke's Bay Today understands a threat was made regarding the event and organisers opted to cancel it. An urgent email sent by school principal Dawn Ackroyd to parents and care-givers stated: "Unfortunately we are cancelling tonight's ball for health and safety concerns based on latest information from police."

Crash injury

A woman aged in her 60s was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital early last night after a motor vehicle crash on Longlands Rd, just south of Hastings. Two cars were involved in the incident just before 5.30pm, one crashing through a fence. The St John Ambulance Service attended up to five people. The woman, initially thought to have serious injuries, was reported by Hawke's Bay District Health Board staff to be likely to be discharged soon.
