Havelock North Club turns to members to help pay $100,000 debt

Havelock North Club has put a levy on all its members to help repay more than $100,000 of debt, sources say.

Three unnamed individuals spoken to by Hawke's Bay Today said the club had increased membership fees and put levies on current members at the club.

They said the club had immediately put a $100 levy on all members and increased the fee for the yearly membership by $150.

The club was also looking into selling a building to pay off debt, they said.

The club, like many around the region and New Zealand, has seen membership drop in recent times. There are now fewer than 100 members.

One former member said because of its location many didn't know where it was and people didn't bother to go out there any more, but instead went into town to enjoy a drink and a meal.

Havelock North Club said last week it would hold a committee meeting on Monday to discuss its issues.

When contacted by Hawke's Bay Today on Tuesday it did not want to comment on the matter.
