A stolen ride-on lawnmower that crashed into a fence in Hastings is checked over for damage. Photo / Michaela Gower

A man and woman are in police custody after crashing a stolen ride-on lawn mower into a fence and trying to flee the scene in Hastings.

Police were called to the intersection of Southampton St West and Charles St at 10.30am on Monday to reports that a ride-on lawnmower had crashed, causing damage to the fence.

A police spokesman said the pair was caught on Southland Rd near Oliphant Rd about 10.45am where they were taken into custody.

One person was taken to hospital following a medical event after the crash.
