Traffic congestion expected at tangi for gang man who died in Hastings

A tangi in Waimarama on Thursday for Mongrel Mob member Bruce Gillies is expected to cause traffic congestion, police say.

On Wednesday police confirmed Mr Gillies, 53, died after officers were called to an incident in Hastings’ Murdoch Pl about 8.50pm on Saturday, where a person was found unresponsive.

Senior Sergeant James Keene said at the time that a man died at the scene after receiving medical assistance.

The matter had since been referred to the coroner.

”Police continue to conduct inquiries on behalf of the coroner. The death is not suspicious. Police’s thoughts are with the man’s family at this time,” a police spokesperson said.

Given the tangi the public can expect to see an increase in police staff in the area as there is expected to be a “large attendance”.

There may be traffic disruptions along Waimarama Road between Tiakitai Road and Taupunga Road about midday.
