With Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week kicking off on Sunday, Napier City Councillor Maxine Boag says different groups of locals will be rolling up their sleeves to pick up rubbish.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful week runs from Sunday, September 14, until Friday, September 19, and Ms Boag, chairwoman of the Keep Napier Beautiful committee, said it was an opportunity for people to give something back to the city by mucking in.
The Hawke's Bay branch of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association is intending to clean up the beach foreshore from the Ellison Rd parking lot south, beginning at 10am on Sunday.
The Napier City Council's Youth Council are also planning to hold a beach clean-up on the 14th. They are meeting at the kayak shop at Pandora at 12.30pm and separating into two groups - some walking around the estuary along the track and the remainderwalking from Hot Chick to the Port.
On Tuesday, staff from Napier's The Warehouse, calling themselves "Redshirts Keeping it Clean" (along with anyone who wishes to join them), will be cleaning up the beach along the Marine Parade beginning at the Ocean Spa at 11am and ending up at the National Aquarium where they will enjoy a sausage sizzle.
While The Warehouse Hastings staff will be removing rubbish from Haumoana Beach. From 1.15pm on Sunday people are welcome to meet at The Domain, weather permitting.
There is no need to pre-register, just sign up on the day. The clean-up will finish at about 3.30pm, bags are supplied.
Staff from the National Aquarium, along with members of the Keep Napier Beautiful committee, will be picking up rubbish south of the Aquarium car park on Wednesday, September 17, between 3-4pm.
The public is welcome to participate in any of the working bees.
"We're hoping that other individuals, schools or organisations will take the opportunity to clean up around waterways in their neighbourhoods during this week," Ms Boag said.
"The number of projects so far organised for the week shows how proud we all are of Napier, and how much we want to keep her looking her best."
