Doug Holloway

Doug Holloway

Left or right? That's what Hawke's Bay professional Doug Holloway will have to contend with when he tees off in the Charles Tour starting today in the Bay of Plenty.

Shortly before teeing off at 8.05am in the Carrus Open, Holloway would have had to make that choice at the Tauranga Golf Club on whether he should opt for his left-handed putter or the right one.

"I'll practise on greens to see how it feels so I haven't made up my mind right or left just yet," said the 31-year-old from Te Pohue last night, soon after arriving in BOP.

It became an issue for Holloway when he clinched the 2015 Craigs Investment Partners Pin High Wanganui Pro-Am at the Belmont Links on September 6.

Holloway shot identical rounds of 71 to finish on 142, one shot clear of Mt Maunganui's Hayden Beard (71 72) and overnight leader Nick Gillespie (67 76) tied for second on 143.

For the record, Holloway is naturally a left-hander but golf is the only thing he switches to right-hand mode. He is capable of playing his irons and woods left-handed but the co-ordination isn't as refined.

"My putting has never been good. It's nowhere near as good as the rest of my game."

In a nutshell, Holloway has ascertained left-hand putting works wonders for him on fast greens but doesn't run so hot on slower ones.

The greens at Tauranga club, he felt, were running fast yesterday during the sponsors' round.

Holloway shares the bragging rights for the the most Jennian Homes-sponsored Charles Tour wins - Michael Hendry equalled his five titles when he won the Lawn Masters Classic in Manawatu in January. "It'll be great to win a sixth one."

On the home front, the protege of PGA professional Brian Doyle will become a father in February. His wife, Rebecca, is expecting their first child and she'll know the sex at her 20-week scan early next month.

"We have no preference as long as he or she is fit and healthy," he said, mindful the addition of a child will demand he curtail his career overseas.
