Hawke's Bay men eclipsed Southland 3 and 2 in the morning but lost by the same margin to North Harbour in the afternoon in Whangarei yesterday.

No2 seed Mako Thompson, No4 Tyson Tawera and No5 Russell Mitchell registered wins against the Southerners on day two of the premier teams matchplay tourney in the country staged at the Mangawhai GC.

Against North Harbour, Thompson backed up with another win - 2 and 1 against Kit Bittle - and Russell, who had shuffled up to No4, joined him with a 1 up win against James Hydes.

NZ U19 champion Thompson beat Southland's Matt Tautari 4 and 3 while Mitchell had crushed Leith Campion 6 and 5 in the morning.

Winter made way for Karamu High School pupil Dylan Bagley who lost 4 and 3 to North Harbour's Jake Lee.

Tournament hosts Northland claimed a huge scalp in the men's Toro Interprovincials by beating defending champions and favourites Wellington 3-2.

"It's been a really good day and I was very proud of the boys to come out firing this morning off the back of the tough loss to Waikato yesterday," Northland's number one and New Zealand high-performance player Luke Brown was quoted as saying on the New Zealand Golf website.

The Hawke's Bay/Poverty Bay women suffered two losses yesterday - 3-1 to Canterbury in the morning and 4-1 to BOP in the afternoon - on day three of the competition.

No5 Sara Deam got their only win over Canterbury - 3 and 2 over Maddie May.

No2 Tessa McDonald, of Gisborne, registered the only win in the afternoon when she beat Bay of Plenty's Jodae Ngaheu 3 and 2.

HBPB captain Janie Field, after her 5 and 4 loss to Jess Crosbie, made way for Nicole Aluni (lost 2 and 1) in the afternoon.
