Gisborne man `seriously ill' following assault

A 41-year-old Gisborne man remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after he was assaulted in a Gisborne park at the weekend.
Police were called to Barry Park about 1am on Saturday by a local resident and found the man, who was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
Waikato Hospital spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill told NZPA the man remained in intensive care and was ``seriously ill''.
A police spokesman said the man had undergone surgery after receiving fractures to his skull and broken ribs in the attack.
Police earlier said it was not known if a weapon was used in the attack, or how many offenders there were.
