Hawke's Bay kids have only until this Thursday to sign up for the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

The event, which is all about encouraging kids aged 7 to 15 to give it a try, will be held at Frimley Park on Wednesday, February 11. Online registrations close on Thursday.

The TRYathlon is a rite of passage for Kiwi kids and boosts a child's self esteem. This year participants will have the chance to meet sporting celebrities Alison Shanks and Dillon Boucher, who will also be attending the event.

Last year's series was hugely successful with three sold-out events and 22,000 children taking part.

The response from parents of kids who participated last year was also positive with a survey showing that 84 per cent of children "really enjoyed" taking part, while an amazing 95 per cent felt positive about finishing the event.

Pierre van Heerden, general manager for Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing Company, says building happy, healthy children and communities is what the TRYathlon is all about.

"Every year it's fantastic to receive positive feedback on an event which grows year-on-year and we expect this series to be no different.

"It's so important for kids to get active at a young age and it's great to be involved in an event which encourages them to do just this in a fun environment," says Mr van Heerden.

The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is the world's largest triathlon Series for under 16s and every child who participates receives a certificate and a medal along with a race pack, a race T-shirt, and a swim cap for all swimmers.

To ensure even more children can take part, teachers and community leaders can apply for support on behalf of a child through the Weet-Bix Foundation.

The foundation provides worthy nominees with a subsidy of Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon entry fees, or a subsidy of necessary equipment to complete the event.

The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon events have a limited number of places available, so schools and individuals who want to be involved should get in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Entries cost $42.50 per person but discounts are offered if you enter in a team of two, as part of a family, or as part of a school.
