A boxing academy is Hastings continues to punch above its weight, thanks to continued support from the Hawke's Bay Foundation.
Boxers from the Giants Boxing Academy recently put on a special demonstration and sparring session for HB Foundation members as a way a of saying thanks and head coach CraigMcDougall the foundation's support had been critical in the club's success.
"Hawke's Bay Foundation have funded us from the beginning almost six years ago. Yes, the finance that they offer is important to us and has been used for a variety of things in our program from necessary equipment to necessary support for members to paying basic overheads.
"One of the key points is their flexibility. It can be tough to get funding for some parts of the programme and at the right time. HBF allow us to work within a wide range of uses. That makes us less vulnerable to holes in the programme and to improved sustainability.
"Secondary but more importantly, HBF provide relationship, mentoring, support and opportunity outside of the giving. It is these qualities that allow some of our boys to step further toward their goals due to community connection and collaboration. HBF help to open doors and are exceptionally approachable when we need to ask for something.
"It is a great relationship for us and goes both ways I'm sure."
Hawke's Bay Foundation trustee Sam Howard said the Foundation was delighted to have supported the Giants with funding for the past six years.
"Craig McDougall and his team at Giants run an amazing programme for young boys and men, with the aim of instilling discipline, confidence and resilience through boxing, teaching them to be fit, well-mannered and active members in our community.
"As they mature, the older trainees mentor and coach the younger members of the club, as well as passing on their skills to the wider community. It's a fantastic example of the community helping the community."
The Hawke's Bay Foundation receives donations and bequests on behalf of generous individuals and businesses. All donations are invested for the long term, with the interest being used to support community organisations in the Hawke's Bay region. As the fund builds, the Foundation can invest even more back into the Hawke's Bay community.
Mr Howard said it was a simple way for people to support their region, knowing that their original donation will grow and be preserved forever.
"It's a simple but clever model, which ensures any money that is given now will continue supporting the community for generations to come."
