It baffles Stephen Hoyle why Hawke's Bay United didn't sign up Napier City Rovers player/coach Bill Robertson, whose wife Kristy is due to give birth to their first child next month here.
"You don't want to be travelling to Wellington with a newborn baby here, do you?" said English importHoyle, adding that the summer franchise wanted every player to go to trial, including captain Danny Wilson who had played in the region for a decade and was 32 years old.
However Wilson, who didn't play last year - fulfilling fatherly duties instead - said he would attend the trials from tomorrow.
"I don't have any ego issues so I don't mind going to the trials," Wilson said, confirming he received a text to attend trials a week before the Chatham Cup final.
Wilson agreed some players felt Bay United weren't sincere about signing them.
Robertson said his decision to return to Team Wellington had nothing to do with his wife giving birth to their first child.
"It was a good opportunity as a player to play in the Oceania League after we qualified in Fiji," said the Wellington co-captain, adding he had had a good relationship with coach Brett Angell, working with him through Central Football.
Asked why marquee Rovers players didn't want to fly the franchise flag, he replied: "I really don't have an opinion on that. It's the players' decision whoever they want to play for."
