A foul mix of maggot-ridden fish carcasses, soiled nappies, broken toys and cigarette butts confronted a woman getting her daily paper.

Long-time Church Rd, Taradale resident Lynne Anderson said she was disgusted by what she believes to be an ill-judged attempt at tossing rubbish into the Taipo stream.

"I think they were probably dumping it over the bridge and into the stream, but it did not go into the stream". Instead, it was strewn over the concrete pipes beyond the bridge.

"We sometimes get doggy poo bags tossed over but there was a nearly a black-rubbish bag full of at least 30 fish carcasses full of maggots, including a large flat fish, babies' nappies, broken toys, cigarette buts etc.

"I am disgusted someone would put such a horrible dump in suburbia.

"It annoys me that people can do that and get away with it."

Lynne decided to clean up the mess so anyone using the walkway around the stream didn't have to stumble across it.

"I got into my big boots and rubber gloves, I figured the fish was organic so it went into the stream, and I carefully separated non-organic rubbish and tied it firmly in a double plastic bag.

"An elderly gentleman was passing by and hung over the bridge and watched me, nice to have the company, when I had finished he said 'now you can go and have your morning coffee'."

She proceeded to throw four buckets on the sordid mess to wash away the maggots.

"Not the best start to a day."
