Firefighters were working hard to keep the blaze under control.

Firefighters were working hard to keep the blaze under control.

Fire services acted quickly in a bid to quell a fire that flared up at the Central Hawke's Bay landfill yesterday afternoon.

A witness on the scene reported that emergency services were alerted to the blaze at 4.10pm with at least three separate brigades attending the incident.

The witnes said thick smoke engulfed the landfill on Farm Rd, Waipukurau.

Speaking to Hawke's Bay Today at 7.30 last night, CHB District Council's Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Bruce Kitto said there were shuttles and tankers on the scene, including a fire crew from Hastings. Talking while on his way to a meeting, he said the crews were working out what to do with what little daylight they had left.

"We are just trying to form our battle plan for the next two hours - I am just walking down with the operations manager to sort that out," he said. "We are trying to make use of the two hours of daylight that we have got left to try and get this thing out.

"We are pretty confident we will get it out, at least to keep it settled down overnight and then we will have reassess it in the morning."
