Police have confirmed one person has died after a car and truck collided just north of Napier's airport this afternoon.

Senior constable Bryan Farquharson said witnesses to the crash saw the car, travelling north, veering towards the truck.

The vehicles collided in the middle of the southbound lane and the impact was thought to be on the driver's side of the truck, which was fully laden with a trailer.

Farquharson said there was a sole male occupant in the car.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Main North Rd, State Highway 2, shortly after 2pm.

State Highway 2 is blocked, near Watchman Rd, and motorists were advised to expect delays.

A police spokeswoman said diversions had been put in place at Hill Rd and Bay View.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
