A Dannevirke family's Christmas has been ruined after a fire forced them to flee their home, and destroyed the presents and belongings left inside.

The fire in the house on Dannevirke's High St started in a bedroom at the back of the house and spread into the roof on Thursday evening.

The house, owned by the Hosanna Dannevirke Baptist Church, was the home of mum Krystle Hetariki and her two children.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

A Givealittle page has been set up by the Hosanna Dannevirke Baptist Church to allow the Dannevirke community to help the family.

According to the page, Hetariki had been a resident in the church house for four years.

Pastor Greg Motu said Hetariki was upset that her children's Christmas presents had been destroyed, but hopeful the community could help.

"A mum and two kids have lost everything," he said. "All their Christmas presents have gone, all their clothes and belongings."

Motu added: "If members of the public wanted to donate anything to the family directly, we at the church could co-ordinate that too."

Dannevirke and Norsewood fire crews responded to the call about 6pm and traffic was reduced to one lane on the town's main thoroughfare while firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Meanwhile, a fire investigator has determined that a fire which badly damaged a home near Mahia on Wednesday afternoon originated in the kitchen.

Volunteer fire crews from three Northern Hawke's Bay stations extinguished the blaze at a property in Lane Rd.

The fire, which was reported at 4.34pm, was responded to by crews from Mahia, nearby Nuhaka and Wairoa, more than 50km away.

No medical callouts were reported.
